Why is it that so many of the songs I chose for my list of favorite classic country Christmas songs are sad? Hard Candy Christmas, If We Make it Through December, and Lyle Lovett’s Christmas Morning all appear on this list for a very good reason–they are damn good country songs. Period. These are songs I love to listen to no matter the season.

Christmas Morning is sung from the perspective of a man who has lost his wife and is reflecting at Christmas time that he doesn’t seem to have the ability to connect with anyone. The girl at the grocery store ignores him, even though she tells him to have a nice day. People on the stret wish him and kiss him and talk about good will towards men. He even remember his wedding day when his wife promised to be his for bad or good. However this refrain follows each verse:

But hey what did you mean by that
Perhaps I’m the fool you take me for
Not anything more

The last verse, however, tells us that the angels each Christmas morning comfort him with salutations from Jesus, and the refrain of the rest of the song does not follow this verse. You can interpret that however you’d like, but Lyle Lovett is a poet for sure.

This post is part of a series called Twelve Days of Classic Country Christmas.
