If We Make It Through December

Like any really good country song should be, this one is sad–a family going through a tough time and planning on trying their luck somewhere else. The dad just “got laid off down at the factory”, and his young daughter doesn’t understand that things are going to be tight this Christmas and that Dad is a little down about their situation. But, “if we make it through December, we’ll be fine.”
I’ve always loved this song, but my strongest memory of it is pretty recent. A few years ago I worked over the holidays as a driver’s helper for UPS running packages from the package car (it’s not a truck) to front doors. The very first day I was paired up with a driver who was a huge Merle Haggard fan, and of course we hit it off instantly. He actually paid someone to make sure that I was his helper every day. At some point every day we’d sing “If We Make It Through December”, which was pretty fitting for the work we were doing.
This post is part of a series called Twelve Days of Classic Country Christmas.
