Bob Wills is Still the King
October 2, 2007I was just listening to the live version of Waylon Jennings’ tribute to Bob Wills — “Bob Wills is Still the King”. Although it isn’t exactly one of Waylon’s best written songs, it’s one of my favorites. And that’s saying a lot because I LOVE Waylon Jennings.
My favorite thing about this song is that it (yet another) slap in the face to Nashville from Waylon:
You can hear the Grand Ol’ Opry in Nashville Tennessee
It’s the home of country music, on that we’ll all agree
But when you cross that old Red River Hoss that just don’t mean a thing
Once you’re down in Texas, Bob Wills is still the king
Maybe it’s because of my general contrary personality, or maybe it’s because I literally grew up on the Outlaws, but I really relate to Texas music much more than Nashville music. That’s strange considering I grew up in Nashville.
Especially these days, Texas music absolutely destroys anything going on in Nashville.
Here’s a great article on Texas and Nashville music.
