The Best of Traditional and Classic Country Music

Great Topic

August 29, 2007

There’s a discussion going on MusicCityBloggers about the saddest country songs ever.  A lot of the people commenting are obviously pretty new to country music, only naming songs that have been released in the last 20 years or so.  To me, the list begins and ends with “I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry” by Hank Williams.  Not just because of the lyrics, which are sad enough on their own, but because of the way Hank sang it.  You can really here the sadness in his voice.

Others that I have to agree with are “He Stopped Loving Her Today” by George Jones, “Chiseled in Stone” by Vern Gosdin, and “Dublin Blues” by Guy Clark.

What’s missing?  “I Just Came Home to Count the Memories” by John Anderson and “I’ve Seen All This World I Care to See” by Willie Nelson.

  1. Kate O' Said,

As one of the commenters citing songs from within the past 20 years or so, I can assure you I’m only “new” to country music in that I’m 33 and have only been listening to it for around 30 years. ;)

But thanks for linking over! I’m glad to have found this site.

  2. john h Said,

Amen. I said exactly the same thing on my website.
