Classic Country Songs About Mom
July 20, 2007
Nope, it’s not Mother’s Day yet, but my wife just had our first baby and I am in awe of here. So here’s a list of my favorite classic country songs about mothers.
***UPDATE***
I was reading through my blog and found this post and thought some people may be interested in it with Mother’s Day coming up so I added a little new commentary.
Mama Tried by Merle Haggard
Mama’s Hungry Eyes by Merle Haggard
Merle Haggard is the King of Mama songs as far as I’m concerned. It’s a classic theme in country music that all the good ol’ boys respect and love their mom’s more than anything else in the world. Both of these songs show The Hag’s reference for his mother. Two of the best Merle Haggard songs period if you ask me.
The Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised by Johnny Paycheck
A funny song, but again he shows a lot of reverence for his mother. More of a jail song than a mama song? Maybe. But I think a lot of people can relate to it, even if they haven’t been in jail.
Papa Loved Mama by Garth Brooks
Well, uh, nothing necessarily nice to say about mama in this one, although for all of her bad behavior he doesn’t really talk bad about her either–sort of glosses over the fact that she had a man addiction and ended up getting run over by a truck in a motel room. I still think it’s funny though.
Sowin’ Love by Paul Overstreet
This one is about mom and dad both, but it conveys a lot of love in the family. A sweet song remembering both parents.
Mama He’s Crazy by The Judds
Wasn’t this the first hit for the Judds? It fits their act perfectly. Although I always suspected that the guy was using Wynonna just to get close to Naomi…hubba hubba.

Mama Tried was one of his best. I just heard him perform it in Bakersfield the other night. It reminded me that…
