Patriotic Classic Country Songs

June 28, 2007

Just in time for Independence Day, here are some patriotic classic country songs that are perfect for the 4th of July. Some of the these are heart-felt patriotic, a couple are in-your-face patriotic, and a couple are a little more contemplative. Hope you all have a great Fourth!!!!

Proud to be an American by Lee Greenwood

This one is an obvious choice. Lee Greenwood has made a living in recent years singing this song at sporting events in his red, white, and blue leather jacket. Some people have even proposed this song be made the new national anthem. I don’t know about that, but the song really is timeless.

In America by Charlie Daniels

This one is a little less sentimental, and a little more whoop your ass! It is pretty cool to go back and listen to this song knowing that the Soviet Union fell and that a lot of what Charlie Daniels said in this song was pretty much right on. I loved it when I was a kid because I was a huge Pittsburg Steelers fan.

America by Waylon Jennings

Composition wise, this may be the best song in the list. It has great lyrics, and gets across some really big ideas. In a very short song it tells a lot about the history and character of the people of the United States. Also, it finds a way to be patriotic without all of the chest thumping and threatening attitude.

Living in the Promise Land by Willie Nelson

I’m a sucker for any Willie Nelson Song, but this is one of my top 10. This song describes how living in the USA isn’t always easy, but it is better than anywhere else to live. I realy love the line, “bring us your foreign song and we will sing along”.

Fighting Side of Me by Merle Haggard

I’ve often wondered how many drunk frat boys who are sing along with David Allan Coe’s “You Never Even Called Me By My Name” have a clue about the reference to this song. I always chuckle when The Hag mentions the “squirly guy” who “don’t believe in fightin’”. Ever notice that he doesn’t ever mention “America” in this song? He doesn’t have to. There’s no doubt where Merle comes from.
