Sexiest Classic Country Songs

May 26, 2007

After listing the songs, I realized this post could just have easily been called, “Conway Twitty’s Sexiest Songs”. Of course this isn’t a comprehensive list, just the ones that came up off the top of my head, and Conway has four of the ten I thought of. His are by far the sexiest too. So here they are in the order that I thought of them:

Lay You Down — Conway Twitty

“I’ll come right out and tell you, I just love to lay you down”. I remember playing this song once with some guys I jammed with. One of them had never heard it before, and his response was, “so basically this guy is saying that he just wants to #$@#@, right?” Yep. That’s about it. But there’s redemption here. At least he’s singing about a monogamous relationship.

You’ve Never Been This Far Before — Conway Twitty

“I don’t know what I’m saying, as my trembling fingers touch forbidden places…bum bum bum” . When I was a little kid I’d sing this song all the time, I guess because I liked the “bum bum bum” part. This song is just about the dirtiest thing I’ve ever heard on country radio–not exactly appropriate for a little kid to sing. It is actually very well produced. It starts off soft, builds in intensity and volume to a climax, and then backs down a little bit. Not a bad artistic interpretation if you ask me.

Blanket on the Ground — Billy Jo Spears

Just once more I wish you’d love me on a blanket on the ground. Very ladylike, huh? A guy told me once that he remembers going to his dad’s company Christmas party, and every year there was a woman who’d get up and sing this song with the band. All of the drunk redneck guys would be screaming, “I’m going to get it baby!!!” He said she was super trashy. I love it!

World’s Greatest Lover — The Bellamy Brothers

“I can’t begin to say what she does for me”. Sure, they don’t come out and say it, but they sure as hell insinuate it.

It’s Been a Great Afternoon — Merle Haggard

“Then one rowdy afternooner got me up and around” This song may not be as sexy as some others, but just the fact that it is all about “a great afternoon” makes it on my list. The hell raisin’ time described about the night before sounds pretty fun too.

Feels So Right — Alabama

Your body feels so gentle, and my passion rises high” I actually prefer this song to the more obvious choice, “When We Make Love”. This song is much sexier. It is sung from the perspective of being in the moment instead of being nostalgic about what happened before. Plus the ending with, “ah, you feel so right baby”. Probably their dirtiest song.

Slow Hand — Conway Twitty

“You want somebody who will spend some time, not come and go in a heated rush” If you can, find a video of Conway doing this song. As he sings the chorus, he holds his right hand up and moves it back and forth. I saw Conway pull this move live at a concert. The ladies went absolutely berserk.

Don’t Close Your Eyes — Keith Whitley

“Just hold me tight when you love me tonight, and don’t close your eyes “

Red Neckin’ Love Makin’ Night — Conway Twitty

“You feel it the most when you get real close and you hold on tight” . Conway is the master of innuendo. It doesn’t matter if he wrote the song or not, you know exactly what he means when he sings things like this.

I’m sure I’ve left plenty of songs out. As I’m hitting “publish”, Freddie Hart’s “Easy Loving” is playing. What are the others I’ve missed?
