Merle Haggard — Okie From Muskogee

May 19, 2007

This is one of my favorite songs to sing at karaoke. Even if they’ve never heard it, people are always singing along by the end of the song. A lot of people don’t know that “Okie” was actually a derogatory term for people from Oklahoma. Merle wrote this song for his dad, who was called an Okie. Merle had it rough growing up. He was born in a converted boxcarDown Every Road in Bakersfield CA, and his father died when he was young.

I think it’s pretty cool that he wrote this song for his dad, and it’s one of my favorite songs by the Hag.
