George Jone Live
May 1, 2007I think it was in 1991 that I finally got to see The Possum play live. The concert took place at Greer Stadium after a Nashville Sounds game. You bought a ticket to the game, and you got to see George Jones play afterwards. The show was really good, but there is something about it that disturbs me to this day.
This was George Freaking Jones–in NASHVILLE!!! George Jones should be selling out a baseball stadium by himself without a game beforehand, especially in Nashville! How can
it be that in Music City USA, The Country Music Capital of the World, the guy who sang “He Stopped Loving Her Today”, what I believe to be the greatest country song ever, is playing after a minor league baseball game?!?!?!
Looking back, I think this is the day that it all changed for country music. I mean, not that EXACT day, but that is day that marks the change for me. At the time, “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes” didn’t have the meaning that it has for me now.
I’m assuming if you’re reading this that you are a fan of classic country and long for the old days. When did it changed for you? Was there a certain event or year, or was it a gradual change?
