Mel Tillis — Who’s Julie?
April 30, 2007I heard a Mel Tillis song on XM the other day called “Who’s Julie?” I don’t remember having heard this song before, so I paid attention. The basic story of the song is that the main character wakes up for breakfast and his wife tells him that he was talking in his sleep. Now she wants to know, “Who’s Julie?”
She goes on to tell him that she loves him so, and she’s obviously upset about what is going on. Still, it doesn’t sound like she’s leaving–she wants to work things
out. Now, I didn’t think there was much that is special about this song, and I definitely wouldn’t be writing about it, if not for the ending. At the end of the song, the character tells her that Julie is the girl who does what she won’t do, remembers what she doesn’t remember, and makes him feel the way she can’t. Then he stops singing and in a speaking voice says, “Now I’ve told you. And don’t ever ask me again–Who’s Julie.”
Damn! I can just imagine the video for this song. As the music is playing winding the song up, he sits down at the table, and she obediently brings his eggs and bacon to him and pours a cup of coffee. The message of the song is Mel Tillis don’t take sass from no woman.

Was that the old comedy version of the song? I think it had one of his backup
singers bantering back and forth with him.
