Worst Country Song Ever

April 24, 2007

Although it changes on a daily basis, I think the worst country song I’ve ever heard (pre-1992) is “Child Support by Barbara Mandrell. This song is so ridiculously idiotic that I don’t think anybody could even record it now, which makes it a true mystery as to how it got recorded (and released, and was popular) back then. What has me even more perplexed is that this was someone’s favorite song at some point!

Thankfully she did not include it on her “Ultimate Collection”. She actually had some pretty decent songs, and was a great entertainer. “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool” is great. Up until about 10 years ago, I thought the line was “I remember when no one was lookin’ I was puttin’ peanuts in my coat.” Of course the line is “Coke”, not “coat”. I remember thinking as a kid, “I know lots of country people, and they’d never steal anything, especially peanuts!!!”
