The Best of Traditional and Classic Country Music

My Bestest Friend

April 24, 2007

For some reason I woke up with this song in my head the other morning. I really love the opening line “Who wipes me off when I get gravy on my shirt?”

Mac Davis did some really good stuff back in the day. “In the Ghetto”, which he wrote, was a really big song for Elvis. Why is no one writing songs like this anymore (except for maybe Robert Earl Keen)?

My favorite Davis song is “Lubbock Texas in my Rearview Mirror.” It’s a very honest reflection on growing up and finding yourself. It seems like usually the things you are born with are some of the best things you’ll ever have, and one of the best ways to realize this is to go chase something else that you don’t want once you get it.

Anyway, the last line of the song is great:
“And when I die you can bury me in Lubbock Texas–in my jeans.”
